WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that replaces phone numbers with unique usernames as the app’s main form of identity, marking a major upgrade in how users connect.

This marks a major shift from its long-standing identity system, which has always tied accounts directly to users’ phone numbers. The system has been a concern for many users, as it essentially exposes your phone ID to anyone you connect with on the messaging app.

Unique usernames will give users greater privacy, flexibility, and security—allowing people to connect without sharing their personal phone numbers.

WhatsApp has briefed business users on the new feature and how to prepare.

“WhatsApp will soon support […] the ability to adopt a username. This has strong benefits for people and businesses alike: usernames offer a simple way to protect privacy by displaying a username rather than a phone number when messaging others in one-on-one conversations and in groups,” the company said.

The company said the username option will be rolled out next year, giving users more control over how they share their contact information.

“For businesses, usernames will allow you to easily build your brand presence on WhatsApp based on your name rather than your phone number, making it easier for customers to connect with you,” the company explained.

“Usernames will make it easier for people to message your business and give them confidence about their privacy – two positive changes to the business messaging experience on WhatsApp.”

Businesses have until June 2026 to update their systems to use the new business-scoped user ID, which will be required to process messages from customers who adopt usernames.

“This new identifier will be available on current and new API versions as a new webhook field. Developer docs are available here,” WhatsApp stated.

Switching from phone IDs to unique usernames as key identifiers will make messaging on the app more secure and user-friendly for those cautious about sharing their phone numbers.
